A huge new Navy fuel ship was launched into San Diego Bay Saturday bearing the name of Harvey Milk, the slain civil rights leader whose activism fed a social movement that decades later won the right for gay people to openly serve in the military.

LGBTQ national leaders and government officials from all over the United States will be descending upon San Diego on Nov. 6for the official launching ceremony of the USNS Harvey Milk at the NASSCO Shipyard.

Two aircraft carriers to leave San Diego Thursday

The San Diego harbor will be less two ships after Thursday.

Aircraft carrier Carl Vinson and destroyer Wayne E. Meyer will set course for assignments in the Pacific and Indian oceans.

The Carl Vinson will head a fleet of ships including the Meyer and cruiser Lake Champlain along with Hawaiian-based destroyer Michael Murphy.
