OTTAWA, Canada -- It is estimated nearly half of Ottawa's homeless youth population identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ), and one-Toronto based researcher calls the issue an "epidemic" across Canada.
According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, each year between 500,000 and 1.6 million youth in the U.S. are homeless or runaways. LGBT youth make up an estimated 3% to 5% of the general U.S. population, yet they account for 20% to 40% of the homeless youth population.
The public is welcome to attend the lecture, which was organized to focus on the diversity of the LGBTQ and ally community. Through the FLUID series, SDSU hopes to expand the knowledge and understanding of important topics while building community.
The gay icon’s shelter on West 154th Street in Harlem will be called True Colors Residence and will support young people who have been kicked out of their homes and disowned by their parents or guardians.
