"This bill bans non-scientific 'therapies' that have driven young people to depression and suicide. These practices have no basis in science or medicine and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery," Gov. Jerry Brown says.
The California Assembly today voted 52-21 in favor of a bill that will protect LGBT youth from dangerous and abusive treatments by mental health practitioners who falsely claim to be able to change their sexual orientation or gender expression.
"We expect that the City, after paying out settlements in both the Eagle raid case and now this case, has learned to avoid the unnecessary costs of failing to treat LGBT people and those living with HIV fairly and appropriately."
The U.S. District Court for the District of Nevada late Friday agreed to hear a lawsuit brought by Lambda Legal on behalf of eight same-sex couples challenging Nevada's law banning marriage for same-sex couples.
"Because there often is no one monitoring the police when LGBT and HIV-positive people are the victims, this survey will provide critical information for our entire community and help shape Lambda Legal's work to hold government officials accountable."
