Local organizations to honor Harvey Milk on May 22

The Equality Business Alliance, the Imperial Court de San Diego, San Diego Remembers, and the San Diego LGBT Visitors Center, will host a virtual event on on Saturday, May 22 to honor the late Harvey Milk on what would be his birthday.

A virtual wreath laying ceremony will be from the Harvey Milk Memorial Bench in Balboa Park and community members are encouraged to tune in.

It was a big news week both locally and globally. First, one of three naval vessels honoring historic civil rights leaders began construction in San Diego with the USNS John Lewis. The next ship on the assembly line will the USNS Harvey Milk.

On Friday Taiwan became the first Asian state to legalize same-sex marriage.

This week SDPIX publisher Johnathan Hale is having the first one of the season with DJ Dirty Kurty to benefit the Trevor Project. Also this week is the annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast which celebrates those LGBT business owners and allies who make a difference every day.

As the country celebrates Harvey Milk Day today, the San Diego LGBT community can be proud to live in a city where he is celebrated and remembered, perhaps more than other place on the map.

Today marks the 87th birthday of LGBT activist and politician Harvey Milk.

The northern California gay rights icon dedicated his life to the community and made great strides in advancing the movement in the United States until he was assassinated in 1978. He was the first-ever out gay politician.
