With California still under stay-at-home orders, most of our fun these days consists of either taking the dog for a walk, standing in line at the grocery store, or picking up take out food.

It was a big news week both locally and globally. First, one of three naval vessels honoring historic civil rights leaders began construction in San Diego with the USNS John Lewis. The next ship on the assembly line will the USNS Harvey Milk.

On Friday Taiwan became the first Asian state to legalize same-sex marriage. 

We are getting closer to summer and that means closer to Pride. And what would Pride be without a pool party? This week SDPIX publisher Johnathan Hale is having the first one of the season with DJ Dirty Kurty to benefit the Trevor Project. Also this week is the annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast which celebrates those LGBT business owners and allies who make a difference every day. 

In 2016, the then Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus officially announced that three naval vessels would be named after prominent U.S. civil rights leaders which include Congressman John Lewis, gay rights activist and politician Harvey Milk, and U.S. Senator Robert Kennedy.

As the country celebrates Harvey Milk Day today, the San Diego LGBT community can be proud to live in a city where he is celebrated and remembered, perhaps more than other place on the map.

NEWS 

A man living near California’s wine country was arrested after he made threats against the LGBT community saying he was going to set off pipe bombs at a local Safeway and a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office substation.

Today marks the 87th birthday of LGBT activist and politician Harvey Milk.

The northern California gay rights icon dedicated his life to the community and made great strides in advancing the movement in the United States until he was assassinated in 1978. He was the first-ever out gay politician.

Labor Day is a celebration of people who work hard on both the business and societal front, and what a year this has been.

Just as the year 2015 was a big one for marriage equality, 2016 will be remembered as the year we celebrated the “T" in LGBT.
