Judge Richard Stearns of the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts today entered judgment in favor of the same-gender married couples who challenged the laws that discriminated against them in the military.
With a key piece of DOMA declared unconstitutional, couples where one person was previously removed from the United States have reason to hope that they can reunite with their partner.
“By providing greater clarity on how the Supreme Court’s decision affects one of the laws we enforce, we are contributing to greater equality and greater protection for America’s working families.”
Edith Windsor, the winning plaintiff in the landmark case in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was unconstitutional, will be one of the guests at a Constitution Day event on Sept. 17.
“Same-Sex Homebuyers 101,” a free forum, will be presented from 10 am to noon Saturday, Sept. 7 at The Center, 3909 Center St. in Hillcrest. Refreshments will be served.
