We all appreciate the power of human connection in a deeper way, having all experienced more isolation since COVID-19. At the start of the pandemic, The Center knew how important connection was for our LGBTQ community and that we would be disproportionately affected by this terrible virus. We also knew that, as we have done for 50 years, that we had to help!

Many of us remember what it was like to be an LGBTQ youth and the unique struggles we faced. Some kept our identity a secret, afraid to lose people we loved, our jobs, our communities. More than a few of us were kicked out of our homes and disowned by our families.

Today marks the beginning of Black History Month, an annual celebration of the achievements and central role of the Black community in the history of the United States. This event grew out of “Negro History Week” which was the brainchild of Black Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent Black leaders and scholars.

As 2020 comes to an end, I am reminded of so many stories over this past year of the real difference that The Center has made in people’s lives. Each of us has a story of when The Center has made us feel welcomed, valued, and supported perhaps during one of the most crucial times of our lives.
