Life with Benny: Harassment of LGBT youth must stop

I did not plan on writing about this topic, but I read these two articles about recent LGBT teen suicides with sadness, anger and a sense of wanting to wrap my arms around all LGBT youth and protect them for the big, bad world that we live in.

Critical Mass: Passion for a cause or just a bunch of obnoxious bikers?

When I was about 13 years old growing up in Allied Gardens, I figured out that if I rode my bike just over a hill towards College Avenue, it would eventually hit El Cajon Blvd, which seemed like a gateway to the world I was isolated from.

Tijuana is ready to show its Pride this weekend

As Tijuana celebrates 15 years of Pride this weekend, organizers are proud of the growth and progress that has occurred in their city, including the addition of this year’s first LGBT Pride Festival.

I don't like to nag, but....

Today at 1 p.m. there will be a Marriage Equality Rally in front of the Federal Building at Front and F Street.

A moment of thanks

Today I turned 30 years old and this then lead me to start thinking about people in my life that I have looked up to and viewed as role models. While there are many people that have shaped who I am today, I really started to think about the gay men that have been central parts of my growth.

Leaving my baggage on doorstep of 30

A wise friend recently reminded me that while all of life is a constant mistake and learning process, our 20s are particularly prone to mistakes. But by entering into the 30s with a clear head and recognition of past missteps, the next phase of life will be so much easier.

Creating change in the world begins at my front door

We all know that San Diego’s gay community is fairly small, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Unfortunately, it sometimes seems like we are living in a high school world with all of the labels, groups and cliques that can be formed.

Gay and the "big picture"

Those who throw around the “gay doesn’t define who I am argument” may argue back that they are just as proud of being gay as I am and just don’t need LGBT media and organizations in their lives.

Countdown to 30: All systems are now GO

When I was 19, I one of my biggest “dreams” was to skip over age 20 so I could reach the seemingly magical age of 21. Time seemed to pass at turtle-like speed as I awaited that “milestone” (now I can’t seem to slow down the hands of time).

My wake-up call on friendships

My most cherished friends are the people with whom I share my deepest thoughts, feelings and secrets. With these friends, I can call them day or night, as many times as I want, to laugh, cry, or even just talk about random nothingness; and they are a huge part of who I am as a person.
