The fund has been designed to benefit college students whose intersecting identities are reflective of Larry T. Baza’s.
After months of planning, Lambda Archives of San Diego is excited to announce the launch of the Larry T. Baza Memorial Scholarship Fund.
It is difficult, if not impossible, to capture in words what Larry’s lasting impact has been and will continue to be on the local Queer as well as the arts and culture community here in San Diego. This Scholarship Fund has been designed to benefit college students whose intersecting identities are reflective of Larry T. Baza’s.
Funding will be provided to students attending community college in San Diego or Imperial County of any or no gender who are both LGBTQ+ and either Chicano/x, Latinx, or Chamorro. Applications are now open and grant recipients will be announced in March of 2022. The application can be found here.
Like many in our community, Lambda Archives Board Member, Gibrán Güido (he/him) was impacted by Larry. The two of them worked together on a book that Gibrán co-edited, Fathers, Fathering and Fatherhood: Queer Chicano/Mexicano Desire and Belonging.
In this collection, there is a piece written by Larry entitled "Tito--A Remembrance of my Father." In his writing, Larry speaks about his personal experience with his father as a self-identified "effeminate boy" growing up who bonded through matriarchy through his "granma," mama and aunts while he recounts the acceptance of his father.
According to Gibrán, “Larry Baza allowed for me to be liberated in San Diego. He inspired, provided a path, his wisdom and insight allowed guidance where he reminded me that I could be myself in spaces/places that are surrounded by violence/intimidation/death. He was kind to me when I needed direction and that was so hard to find from a gay/queer male of color who shared his wisdom (from experience) and knowledge to navigate the world (San Diego). He reminded me that what I was doing was important but also part of a greater cause, part of history. My work, along with the many others that I have had the privilege to share their experience, is a reflection of his/their immeasurable contribution to self, and our lives.”
Lambda Archives’ Board Treasurer, Brianna Mirabile (she/her), has this to say about Larry and the scholarship fund that has been created in his honor:
“I was extremely fortunate to have met Larry Baza when he joined the Board of Trustees of the Museum of Us, where I worked. In 2019, I was selected for an award given out by Friends of Balboa Park and as soon as Larry heard the news he asked if he could attend the ceremony. He spent every moment of the event getting to know each person at our table by asking about our lives, what we were passionate about, and what we hoped for our futures. It was clear to me immediately the passion, warmth, generosity, and curiosity that Larry brought with him always. He took time out of his day to support a young stranger because that was the kind of person I and countless others knew him to be- someone who was dedicated to helping build the next generation of leaders, a fierce advocate, a brilliant and kind person.”
So many of us are lucky to have known and worked alongside Larry T. Baza, to benefit from his brilliance and strength, and to continue to follow in his footsteps. Please join us in honoring Larry’s legacy by donating to the Larry T. Baza Memorial Scholarship Fund today.
