The duo will host their 7th annual Pride kick-off happy hour and everyone is welcome!
Each year, Benny Cartwright and Rick Cervantes invite the community to join together on the Monday of San Diego Pride week for a fun, no-pressure get together before everyone gets busy with other Pride festivities. This year's event is back after being cancelled last year due to the pandemic, and will be held Monday, July 12 from 6-8 pm at The Loft San Diego's new back patio.
While the traditional San Diego Pride Parade and Festival will not be happening this year, a number of other events, hosted by San Diego Pride, local community organizations, and bars and party promoters will happen and this year's San Diego Pride is looking bigger than everyone ever-imagined as we come out of the pandemic.
Cartwright and Cervantes for started this event in 2014 when they realized that so many of their friends, who work year-round to serve the LGBTQ community, never got to celebrate Pride together since most are either working in local bars, volunteering for the various events, or are just too busy dealing with family and friends who come in to Hillcrest for the weekend. They figured the Monday before Pride was the perfect time to invite everyone to come together to do a "cheers" to Pride before the tourists get to town and everyone's Pride weekend work and volunteer obligations commenced.
And it's turned out to be a favorite event year after year! The event includes no formal program (other than a "cheers"), no fundraising, and no politics. It's just a fun time for friends, service industry staff, San Diego Pride staff and volunteers, those who work serving the local LGBTQ community, and really anyone to get together for a fun evening of Pride.
Everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy drink specials, music by DJ Will Soul, and great conversation. Other than a "cheers" to Pride at 7 pm, there is no program, so guests are welcome to come and go as their schedule permits.
"Rick and I truly welcome anyone and everyone (21+) from the community to join us," said Cartwright. "For the last 7-years we have truly enjoyed this event as it brings together such a wide range of folks who work in our community every day. We don't always get to celebrate Pride together since we're all so busy working so we love having these couple hours on Pride week to take a quick break from our busy Pride schedules and just hang out. Please join us!"
The Loft is located at 3610 5th Ave. in Hillcrest. The venue is open to those 21-years and older.
