Donors are welcome to contribute to the project.
With so many people struggling right now due to reduced work hours or unemployment, Rich's San Diego wants to help. The popular Hillcrest nightclub plans to offer free meals every Wednesday to anyone who works at an LGBTQ+ business or organization in Hillcrest and whose livelihood has been affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
Rich's itself has been closed down since March 15 due to state and local health orders limiting public gatherings, but shortly after the closure opened its "Drive Thru Disco" and "Delivery Disco" programs for patrons to get booze to go. The club has had to reduce the majority of its own workforce during the closure, and wants to help not only its own staff, but anyone else in the bar/nightlife/service industry and other Hillcrest business/organization employees who could benefit from a free meal.
The nightclub has set a goal to distribute up to 200 meals every Wednesday from 3-7 pm, with the first distribution taking place Wednesday, April 22. The first meal will be served by Mateo's Hot Spot, the popular late night hot dog cart that sets up outside of Rich's when the club is open. Today's meal will include one of Mateo's delicious hot dogs, chips, and a soft drink.
Those picking up a meal will be asked to engage in social distancing, and multiple pickup timeslots have been made available to stagger the times when people arrive. To register for a free meal, click HERE.
In order to sustain the weekly program for as long as possible while there is a need, those who don't need a free meal but have the means to contribute to the program are welcome to make a donation. Those who would like to donate to the Hillcrest industry meal distribution program can click HERE and follow through the registration steps to enter a donation amount when prompted.
Registration will be available each week for that week's distribution and will be posted to SDLGBTN and SDPIX social media accounts.
Rich's San Diego is located at 1051 University Ave. in Hillcrest.
