Don was well loved by the extended family of The Loft bar in Hillcrest
Many around town are mourning the loss of a community member who was known affectionately by those who knew him as “Uncle Don,” who passed away this weekend. Uncle Don’s death was reported on social media by Jonathan Lopez and Michael Gould, both close friends of Don.
Uncle Don was a regular at The Loft, a popular Hillcrest bar, and was well loved by the extended family of bar staff and regular customers, along with many others in the community. According to a post by Talon Garbiso, a bartender at The Loft, Don spent his last days helping others, including members of his church, his parents, and his friends. Don loved playing bingo, and singing in his church choir among many other activities.
“For those that knew Don he would not want you to cry - he would say let’s throw a party and that’s exactly what we are going to do when this is over,” Garbiso wrote. “It’s hard not to cry but thinking back we always were laughing and enjoying life. I really am going to miss you! Aloha... do something kind for someone, if not for you but for Uncle Don!”
We will share information about any memorial celebrations that are planned in the future.
