SDGLN Weekly Wrap: Nov. 9 - Nov. 15, 2019

Here is everything we covered in SDGLN this week.

It was a short week for many people with Veteran's Day on Monday, but the news didn't take a break especially with the Trump impeachment hearings underway in Washington. One image from those hearings made national news when a well-known drag queen worked as a correspondent for a new newsgathering app.

A teenage high school student got fed up with his homophobic adversary and stood up for himself by slapping him across the face. The whole thing was captured on video and quickly went viral.

Trans Day of Remembrance is on November 20 and Executive Director of San Diego Pride Fernando Zweifach López has something to say about the community banding together and continuing to fight for justice in the face of violence.

This week's Out & About is filled with great ideas for events in the community especially the many Hillcrest LGBT businesses such as Flicks celebrating milestones this week.

All this and more in this edition of the Weekly Wrap.

Jordan Steffy has become an LGBT celebrity of sorts over the past weekend. The teen was captured on video standing up to a bully who continued to call him homophobic epithets. In the video Jordan appears to be being harassed by another student when finally he's had enough.

A drag queen was giving capital hill realness at the Trump impeachment hearings on Wednesday. Pissi Myles of Asbury Park, New Jersey was on the scene at Capitol Hill dressed in a red pleather mini and a blonde bouffant wig.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) responded this week to staggering numbers of hate crimes against the LGBT community: "The number of law enforcement agencies reporting hate crimes data decreased by 110 from 2017 to 2018, and at least 85 cities with populations exceeding 100,000 either did not report data to the FBI, or reported zero hate crimes."

Trans Day of Remembrance is on November 20, 2019. Executive Director of San Diego Pride, Fernando Zweifach López, would like everyone to invest in the trans community amid these dangerous and uncertain times

"As our movement continues to push for greater visibility, acceptance, legal protections, and equity, the push back stoked by a vehemently anti-trans administration is having a loud and violent impact on our community. We need to continue to invest in our trans community in ways that build upon their power, knowledge, and safety." Read more HERE

Our theater critic Jean Lowerison reviews the new play at the Alliant International University’s Legler Benbough Theatre called And Neither Have I Wings To Fly:  "Set in rural Ireland in the 1950s, the Donnelly and Doyle families are a week from a merger: Kathleen Donnelly (Katee Drysdale) is set to marry Leo Doyle (Hayden Emmerson). As preparation, Katie’s dad Peter (Walter Ruskin) offers Leo a job, which he readily accepts."

Celine Dion was in the mood for some fun on Thursday night. In conjunction with the release of her 12th English-language studio album Courage, the megastar visited LIPS to the surprise of guests and performers.

Hillcrest is always so full of excitement at different times of the year that people who lead busy lives often forget about what's going on, especially during the holidays. The Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) wants to help those people keep up by utilizing something they already have; their cellphones.

Lacey is an 8-year-old Spaniel. She was brought in by my previous owner on October 18, 2019, and is available for adoption through the San Diego Humane Society.

Prepare to celebrate six years of OVERDRIVE memories and mayhem with a force to be reckoned with in the global house music scene DJ HECTOR FONSECA (2 am - 5 am)!

As the holidays get closer, and before going away or having people invade your guest room, take some time for yourself and get out into the community and have some fun! This week seems to be the one for anniversaries: Flicker turns eight, The Eagle turns 17 and Baja Bettys has come of age at 15! Read more events happening this week in Out & About
