SDGLN Weekly Wrap: Oct. 26 - Nov. 1, 2019

It was a big holiday week in the community, not only did the gayborhood come alive with Nightmare on Normal Street over the weekend, but Halloween gave us even more tricks and treats on Thursday.

There was big news in the local hospitality industry as it was announced a new gay bar would be opening in Hillcrest in early December. Called the Tin Room, it is an extension of the famous club of the same name in Texas.

Local restaurant owner Cecelia Moreno celebrates 37 years at the Crest Cafe.

We also rounded out the month with even more LGBT History Month icons who helped the community become what it is today.

Also, don't forget to set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed this Saturday night.

All of this and more in this week's San Diego Gay & Lesbian News' Weekly Wrap.

There's a bit of Texas gay culture coming to Hillcrest this year. Just down the street from one of San Diego's oldest gay clubs, The Rail, a new gay bar is set to open this December called The World Famous Tin Room.

We talked to the owner, LGBT ally Lonzie Hershner ahead of his arrival to America's Finest City about what makes this new location so special.

Reverend Irene Monroe talks about racism and Halloween in her latest commentary: "Halloween is one of America’s favorite yearly activities. Unfortunately, Halloween can be America’s scariest, too - especially for those of us seen as costumes you wear rather than the human beings that we are. Asian Americans, Native Americans, blacks, and Muslim women in burqas, hijabs, and Muslim men in turbans with beards are frequent targets of race-themed costumes."

The Executive Director of San Diego Pride, Fernando Zweifach López, reminds us to honor our LGBT veterans: "In many ways, veterans were in part responsible for building our strongest LGBTQ communities across the country.

After serving in WWII and Vietnam, many LGBTQ veterans chose to say close to their newfound families in port cities like San Francisco and San Diego. San Diego has the highest concentration of military personnel and in turn the highest concentration of LGBTQ military personnel in the world."

San Diego Gay and Lesbian News' coverage of LGBT History month continues with profiles on Anne Lister and Arthur Mitchell.

Lister kept extensive diaries—23 volumes over 34 years—documenting her life and same-sex relationships. Lister was born into an aristocratic English family. She received formal schooling, a rarity for a girl of that era. And Mitchell founded the Dance Theater of Harlem, the first black classical ballet company in the United States.

Our theater critic Jean Lowerison reviews “Cyrano, My Love." Jean also went and saw the Cygnet Theatre production of "The Last Five Years," you can read what she thought HERE.

Halloween might be over but slightly north for Palm Springs Pride is just beginning so get ready to have some desert fun in the sun! In this week's Out & About we look at local activities and if you're headed to the desert, Palm Springs Pride pool parties.

Those of you who have been in Hillcrest for the past three or four decades don't need an introduction to the Crest Cafe. Its reputation precedes itself with multiple awards, reality show appearances, and a dining room constantly filled to capacity with satisfied and well-fed customers. This week we profiled owner Cecelia Moreno and talked about what inspired her to dedicate her professional life to foodservice

Hillcrest businesses had plenty of nighttime entertainment for Halloween celebrating the spookiest night of the year with special themed events and exclusive specials. Here's a list of them in case you missed it.

Body Pride is conducting research into the LGBT community, specifically gay and bisexual men. The study is aimed at body image among that group and ways to improve it.
