SDGLN Weekly Wrap: Oct 27 - Nov. 2, 2018

Here is everything we covered in SDGLN this week.

NEWS

This past Friday, Matthew Shepard's remains were interred at the crypt of Washington National Cathedral, City Commissioner Nicole Murray-Ramirez was in attendance representing the City of San Diego.

Just as Matthew Shepard's remains were laid to rest at an Episcopal church in Washington this past Friday, the Trinity Episcopal Church in Lander, WY was defaced with homophobic speech. The Episcopal Diocese of Wyoming released an announcement in which they called the incident "a possible hate crime."

The latest public apology of a gay Trump supporter shouting hateful things and getting caught on camera comes from Charles Geier of Houston who became virally infamous last week when his road rage turned racist.

Drag queens reading to children seems to be the latest focus of conservative groups who aren't comfortable with diversity. A bookstore in Riverside CA. was the scene of a woman who rushed the space in front of dozens of children and parents at the Cellar Door Bookstore.

COMMENTARY

Rev, Irene Monroe explains why Halloween is an LGBT Holiday: "In the words of the lesbian poet and scholar Judy Grahn, Halloween is "the great gay holiday." And this weekend of lavish costumed theatricality will attract everyone, but especially lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) revelers."

ENTERTAINMENT

Mention opera to me and you may as well be trying to explain nuclear science because it's not something that I really understand. So I learned a lot about the art form when I interviewed bass/baritone Evan Hughes who opened "The Marriage of Figaro" for the San Diego Opera playing the titular character.

The cutting-edge dance company, Pilobolus, combines multimedia, projected shadow play, and front-of-screen choreography to tell the story of "Shadowland," a global phenomenon that you will have to see to believe at the Spreckels Theatre on Nov. 10.

Grey's Anatomy actor, Jake Borelli, 27, has been playing his character Dr. Levi Schmitt on that show since 2017. On Thursday night's episode, Dr. Schmitt came out and just a little while later so did Borelli.

Our theater critic Jean Lowerison reviews "Fade" and "Holmes and Watson."

On November 10, 2018, legendary singer and actress Linda Lavin will perform her cabaret show “Linda Lavin Sings!” at Martinis Above Fourth in San Diego.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” is getting the mistletoe ready in the workroom by announcing a new 60-minute special to premiere on December 7.

People are speculating with bated breath whether or not "Kingsman" star Taron Egerton just came out as gay or bisexual this week on social media.

Famous ice cream makers Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield aren't freezing in their tracks during the Trump administration, in fact, they are using his policies on civil rights against him in a flavor they are calling "Pecan Resist" (which is really New York Super Fudge Chunk).

Kanye West may be following on the heels of fellow Trump-supporter Caitlyn Jenner who just this week denounced her allegiance to the administration.

Netflix is celebrating Halloween with a series of short films, and this one starring Queer Eye's Antoni Porowski is both extremely sexy and somewhat terrifying.

SOCIAL

There was a lot to do on Halloween night in Hillcrest, it was still very much alive. Plus people were headed to Palm Springs for Pride

It wasn't long after the New York Times published an article about a leaked memo from the Health and Human Services Department for activists and allies to organize nationally. Photographer Jacquelin Grenzebach attended the San Diego rally and captured the energy of activism and protest.

HEALTH WELLNESS AND SPORTS

Just as the L.A. Dodgers and Red Sox were battling it out for the Commissioner's Trophy at the World Series on Sunday night, activists draped a huge trans Pride flag from over an upper deck in the stadium seats.

According to Trans Lifeline, the number of calls coming into their crises center have quadrupled since the New York Times printed a story about an alleged memo that proposes to erase transgender individuals from society.
