This mock-up of the iconic movie has won "Best Decorated" vehicle at SD Pride in the past.
Fans of "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" are in for a treat at San Diego Pride this year. For the fourth year in a row, organizers at RainbowRV are entering their version of the titular bus from the movie into the parade.
You may remember in that film a group of drag queens travel the Australian outback visiting small towns on an adventure of self-discovery in a bus named "Priscilla." In one of the film's most memorable scenes, the men attach a giant high heel prop to the back of the bus with huge ribbons of silver lamé and drive through the desolate Australian landscape while Felicia (Guy Pierce) lip-syncs the opera La Traviata.
Taking a cue from that scene the LGBT RV camping collective RainbowRV is once again entering their version of Priscilla into the parade complete with the giant signature pump.
RainbowRV has driven the Priscilla float in the San Diego Pride Parade since 2011, taking home the prize for "Best Decorated" vehicle that year as well as in 2012. The float was also asked to attend the San Diego premiere of “Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical” in 2016.
"Our float was constructed all in-house by myself and my husband of thirty years Gregory O’Connor and the very first time we unveiled the float was at Palm Springs Pride Parade 2009," says owner Tim Vasquez. "It is a working float that lowers and rises to clear signal lights and bridges when we are in a Parade."
And for those of you who can't get enough of Priscilla, check out FilmOut's special theatrical screening of the film on Wednesday, July 11 at the Hillcrest Cinemas - Landmark Theatres.
The San Diego Pride Parade takes place on July 14 at 11 am.
