A busy month in store for the award-winning chorus.
As much as Pride season belongs to the community so too does it belong to The San Diego Gay Men's Chorus as they fill their schedule for the next few months with events, special appearances, and one of their signature themed concerts.
This year the chorus is suffering from Stockholm Syndrom having been held captive, as we all have, by the voices of those Swedish pop stars ABBA. In a show aptly called "ABBA - Greatest Hits" the chorus is celebrating Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, and Ann-Frid (ABBA) by performing their most famous songs that span all the way back to the first San Diego Pride over 40 years ago.
This show premieres two weeks after Pride on Saturday, July 28 and Sunday, July 29.
Speaking of Pride even though their concert begins after that weekend, the SDGMC is working hard before they step onto the stage at the Balboa Theatre, "What I think is very cool about the Chorus during Pride is that we are involved in it in so many ways," said SDGMC Executive Director Bob Lehman.
"On Pride Saturday, we'll be selling Pride Music Festival tickets at six booths along the Pride Parade route," he added. "We'll be in the parade with our summer show sponsor Sycuan Casino and then we sing at 3:30 pm. from the Main Stage at the Pride Music Festival. Lot's of fun and lots of pride!"
But their commitment goes way beyond the parade route with several appearances throughout the month with some major announcements.
"We recently helped launch Pride Month on the Qualcomm campus singing as the Pride flag was raised along with Qualcomm's LGBT employee group eQuality," explains Lehman. "The Wednesday of San Diego Pride week (July 11), we're part of the U.S. Navy NAS North Island Pride Celebration in the morning and then in the evening we're headed to St. Paul's Cathedral for its "Light up the Cathedral" Pride Celebration. So, we're partnering with a major corporation, the U.S. Military and the faith community for Pride!!"
