The owner of one of the oldest nightclubs in Hillcrest celebrates a birthday this week.
Jeff Jackson, The owner of Flicks is celebrating a birthday on May 26, and we here at San Diego Gay and Lesbian News, and all of Hale Media wish him a day of celebration, fun and happiness.
Originally from New York, Jackson came to San Diego in 2002. He would often visit Flicks during his travels here, and one man in particular became a very good friend.
That man was Nigel Mayer who had owned Flicks for twenty years, but was in the process of selling the landmark nightclub.
"When Nigel said he was selling the place, I knew it was the right opportunity and we bought it," Jackson told SDGLN at the time.
Having had enough of the east coast weather, Jackson made the nearly 3,000 mile trip to America’s Finest City too start a whole new life.
“We once were stuck in the car on the freeway during a snowstorm for 14 hours,” Jackson said in 2013. “After that experience, we decided we never wanted to have to live through those type of extreme weather conditions again.”
Since Jackson took over Flicks it has remained one of the best entertainment night spots in Hillcrest.
Weekly events include Welfare Wednesday/College Night, an underwear contest on Saturday nights and their famous event which happens every Thursday called Flicker.
In 2013, Jackson said that he felt like an outsider coming into the community, but he has since become a well-known business owner and friend to Hillcrest, keeping Flicks a popular destination just as it has been for nearly 40 years.
San Diego Gay and Lesbian News wishes Jackson a very happy birthday and continued success as a local businessman.
Flicks is located at 1017 University Ave. in the heart of Hillcrest. More information is HERE.
