Locally it was announced this week that Nicole Murray Ramirez gots a day named after him in Massachusetts

Also SeaWorld was enveloped in controversy as one of its polar bears died after its same-sex partner of 20 years was re-located: PETA says it was "heartbreak.". In Ocean Beach a man threatened to blow up its library. And Mission Hills residents brought up whether or not they should get a historic archway sign into the community.

San Diego's own MiraCosta College is the first in the country to offer transgender students a scholarship opportunity

National news saw a transgender senior in Indianapolis take home the crown as prom king, and a mysterious cross in NYC was given a pride makeover. Also, in Tennessee, a bill was passed that proposes to have government documents use "natural and ordinary meaning" when it comes to gender identity labels. 

COMMENTARY

The Reverend Irene Monroe weighs in on the mysterious reason why football star Aaron Hernandez used a Bible verse in his suicide note. And author and activist Gabriella van Rij asks what it means to give up one label only to be given another. 

Guest columnist Andrew Bidwell says  there are "Gut-wrenching truths about gay relationships."

CAUSES

GLAAD calls on media to be responsible in covering trans murders. David Medina's family and friends had a fundraiser at Glass Roots Salon this past Thursday to help with burial costs. 

ENTERTAINMENT

San Diego's own transgender police officer Christine Garcia is the subject of a new documentary.

And all the craziness of WTF comes to Rich's on Saturday night in their Mile High Party

Last year's emcee of WTF, celebrity vlogger TS Madison, gets her own talk show on World of Wonder, and Out and Proud week was celebrated at UCSD

San Diego Gay and Lesbian News' theater critic Jean Lowerison reviewed a few shows in and around San Diego. This week she wrote about "Travels With My Aunt," and "Margin of Error."

Finally, MTV Movie and Music Awards have taken away the gender labels from their performer categories this year. 

Also rounding out the week in entertainment news, musician Ja Rule's Fyre Festival in the Bahamas is described as being a "Lord of the Flies" sequel.
