"Out and Proud” week begins today at the LGBT Resource Center at UC San Diego.

This is a weeklong event  which highlights LGBT involvement on campus and hopes to educate people about the community at large.

"It's a moment in time for us to be visible," said Dr. Shawn Travers, director of the LGBT Resource Center. "Not that we're ever closeted, but to intentionally be very visible and to engage in conversations around the politics and practices of the community."

There will be lectures, dining events and a screening of the movie “Major!” which, “chronicles the life and campaigns of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a 75 year old Black transgender elder and activist who has been fighting for the rights of trans women of color for over 40 years.”

The award-winning film documents Griffin-Gracy's involvement in the Stonewall riots and follows her up to the present day.
