Happy New Year! While 2016 already seems like a distant memory, we re-capped the top local news stories of the year here.

2017 brought a host of new laws and regulations to California and San Diego, including a minimum wage hike. San Diego's wage increase is higher than the state's and since Jan. 1, many diners have noticed a surchage tacked on to their bill. A Hillcrest restaurant has been accused of hiding a hefty surcharge.

The reported murder of a trans person marks the first in 2017.
