Community forum on homelessness in Hillcrest to be held Tuesday

The Hillcrest Town Council's Tuesday, May 10 meeting will be themed around an important topic to the Hillcrest Community: homelessness.

Everyone is welcome to attend the forum which will include time for community members to ask questions of expert panelists familiar with homelessness as it relates to Hillcrest and throughout the San Diego region.

The panel will discuss local policies and advocacy efforts on this issue. Community members will be encouraged to give input and ask questions. 

The meeting will be from 6:30-8 pm on Tuesday, May 10 at the Joyce Beers Community Center. More information about the scheduled speakers is below. 

Keynote Speaker: Hon. Nathan Fletcher

Hon. Nathan Fletcher will speak about his work with Three Wise Men Veterans Foundation, including his work to help veterans experiencing homelessness. Fletcher will discuss systemic causes of veteran homelessness, as well as policy efforts and social services addressing this problem. 

In addition to his work with 3WM, Fletcher works at Qualcomm to expand opportunities where technology has the power to positively transform people’s lives. He teaches political science at UCSD. In January 2013, he was an elected member of the California State Assembly. He also served in the Marine Corps where he was decorated for valor in combat. 

Additionally, Fletcher has worked with NGO’s to help build and improve democracies in countries including East Timor, Cambodia, Serbia and Myanmar. He is an Ironman Triathlete and avid outdoorsman who enjoys surfing and alpine mountaineering/glacier climbing. He lives in San Diego with his two boys, Zach and Caleb.


-Officer Ricardo Pinon, San Diego Police Department, Community Relations Officer will answer questions relating to homelessness in Hillcrest and throughout the City.

-Jennifer Buck, Think Dignity, will answer questions related to Think Dignity's work in San Diego to inspire, empower, and organize our community to advance basic dignity for those living on the streets.

-Brandon Smith, Alpha Project , will discuss his on-the-ground work with homeless community members in Hillcrest. Alpha Project is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) human services organization that serves over 4,000 men, women, and children each day.

-Ben Nicholls, Executive Director, Hillcrest Business Association, will discuss the HBA's work to fund the Homeless Outreach Program in Hillcrest in partnership with Alpha Project. 

-Karina Vesco, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, will discuss her work with individuals who are homeless in Hillcrest through her work at the inpatient psychiatry unit at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.
