Rowan Williams: "The church has failed gay and lesbian people"

CAMBRIDGE, England -- The Church of England has "failed" many gay people, according to the former Archbishop of Canterbury.

Swansea Valley- born Rowan Williams — who is now Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge — said the issue of homosexuality and gay marriage was one where the church was most out of step with the rest of the culture.

In an interview with Cambridge's student paper, The Tab, the former Dynevor School pupil said: "I think the church has to put its hands up and say our attitude towards gay people has at times been appallingly violent.

"Even now it can be unconsciously patronizing and demeaning, and that really doesn't help.

"We have to face the fact that we've deeply failed a lot of gay and lesbian people, not only historically but more recently as well."
