THURSDAY: San Diego Democrats for Equality to discuss Mayor Filner controversy

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Democrats or Equality has changed its agenda for the meeting scheduled for Thursday, July 25.

Vince Hall, former Chief of Staff for Mayor Bob Filner was scheduled to speak, but he recently resigned from his position. Instead, the club will conduct an open forum for club members to express their opinions regarding the current controversies surrounding the mayor, particularly in light of the filing on Monday of a sexual harassment case against the mayor and the City of San Diego.

At the conclusion of the forum, the club may consider taking a formal position on the situation. In order to allow for members to feel comfortable speaking candidly, a motion will be made to close the forum and discussion on this topic to current club members only.

In addition, the club will consider adoption of a resolution that would add the club's voice to the call by many organizations asking for the Department of Justice to conduct an investigation into whether Trayvon Martin's death at the hands of George Zimmerman in Florida violated Martin's civil rights.

The meeting begins at 7 pm at the Joyce Beers Uptown Community Center, located at 3900 Vermont St. in Hillcrest (across from Trader Joe's).

A social will precede the meeting at 6:30 pm. The club will provide beverages for the social; members are encouraged to bring refreshments to share.

Attendees should park in the underground parking in the Uptown District shopping center; those who park in the surface parking risk having their car towed.
