West Hollywood's guide to planning a same-gender wedding

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Wedding bells are ringing in West Hollywood, and hundreds of ceremonies have been performed in the days since same sex marriage resumed in California in late June. To assist couples hoping to tie the knot in the most LGBT-friendly city in the world, Visit West Hollywood has prepared a guide to West Hollywood weddings.

From obtaining a marriage license to planning the ultimate honeymoon, this guide is designed to help same-sex couples affirm their commitments and mark this momentous occasion in high style.

“With more than 30% of the residential population identifying as LGBT, West Hollywood has long been one of the most popular gay travel destinations, offering visitors a wonderful location to celebrate their individuality,” said Bradley Burlingame, President & CEO of Visit West Hollywood.

“From a simple civil ceremony to a lavish rooftop affair, West Hollywood offers not just unique wedding venues but an overarching spirit of inclusion and a longstanding support for the LGBT community that is woven into the city’s foundation.”

At 1.9 square miles in size, West Hollywood is located in the center of the Greater Los Angeles region and is home to 39,000 residents, more than 30% of whom identify as gay or lesbian. Founded in 1984, the city has always been at the forefront of the equal rights movement. In its first year, West Hollywood became the second city in the nation to create a domestic partner registry. In 1985, the city adopted a Domestic Partnership Ordinance that provided equal rights for domestic partners and married couples in the city.

West Hollywood was also one of the first cities in the country to pass a resolution in support of marriage equality and has been one of the most ardent and vocal advocates for the legal rights of same-sex couples and the right to marry. With its stellar equal-rights credentials, West Hollywood is the ideal destination for same sex couples looking to tie the knot. So, what exactly do couples need to do to formalize their commitment?

A marriage license can be issued from one of the listed Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk branch offices. The closest location to West Hollywood is the Beverly Hills office. Couples should be sure to review the detailed information about the marriage license and civil ceremony process before going to the County to get a license or coming to West Hollywood for a ceremony.

The simplest way to get married is to have a civil ceremony in West Hollywood. Ceremonies will be conducted every Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Kings Road Park. You must make an appointment in advance, which you can do at a branch of the LA County Registrar-Recorder’s office. You can make an appointment at the same time that you get your marriage license or by calling 310-288-1261. There is a $25 fee. Availability of civil marriage ceremonies is limited, so be sure to book as far in advance as possible and refer to this helpful LA County guide to getting your marriage license and the civil ceremony process for full details.

If you are looking for a more elaborate ceremony or want to throw a reception after your civil ceremony, West Hollywood offers a wide array of stunning venues, from hotel rooftops with panoramic views, to charming garden settings, to non-traditional settings like legendary Sunset Strip music venues.
