SAN DIEGO -- With just a few days until this weekend's San Diego LGBT Pride celebration, the rainbow flag that flies year-round atop the Hillcrest Pride Flag pole is missing! No need to worry, though, it wasn't some sort of "rainbow theft" or pre-Pride prank. Rather, the stewards of the flag are preparing it for something big this weekend.
In special celebration of Pride this year, the Hillcrest Business Association will fly a 20-foot x 30-foot rainbow flag on the pole, which is the size of flag that was originally intended for the community landmark that was installed last year. Smaller versions of the flag have flown on the pole throughout the year.
The halyard on the flag pole is being re-sized this week to make sure that the extra large flag waves properly (the halyard is the rope that is used to hoist the flag), so there will be no flag flying on the pole for the remainder of the week.
Community members are invited to gather around the flag pole for San Diego Pride's annual Spirit of Stonewall Rally on Friday, July 12 at 6 pm, in which the flag will be hoisted in celebration of the city's 39th annual LGBT Pride. The event is free and open to the public.
Following the rally, the second annual Pride of Hillcrest Block Party will be held, featuring music, dancing, DJs, and entertainment. Tickets are HERE.
