SAN DIEGO -- One of the biggest challenges many people face when purchasing a new home or renovating their current place of residence is upgrading the kitchen and bathroom areas. The fixtures in these rooms can easily make a space look dated, and if not done right, can cause a number of challenges in the home.
Kitchen & Bath Design/Build is a local award-winning company with over 25 years of experience. Their mission is simple: to provide clients with personalized service and innovative kitchen and bath design solutions using premier products and up-to-the-minute technology.
The company is one of a select number of kitchen remodel firms that offer a one-stop experience to clients in the San Diego area, being personally available at every stage of a project, from the initial consultation through the design phase to the selection of products and our expert installation.
Founded and owned by Dwight Van Slyke, Kitchen & Bath Design/Build's general contractor, the business has been in operation for 28 years. Van Slyke is joined by Helen Shelden, the firm's interior designer.
Both have a wealth of experience that make them the best at what they do.
Van Slyke is a general contractor with a “B” license. Having grown up in the construction business he started as a laborer, plumber’s helper and heavy equipment operator. Later, he decided to go into sales, which resulted in a job selling construction-related hand tools for fastening and anchoring. Van Slyke eventually became a regional sales manager for the 11 western states.
When he was helping a friend remodel his kitchen, Van Slyke caught the "remodeling bug," and especially loved working on older homes. Little by little, and being lucky enough to work with some real experts in the field, he settled into remodeling.
Shelden is a graduate of the Design Institute of San Diego, holding a bachelor of fine arts in interior design. She established her design career by specializing in yacht and residential design, and is currently prolonging her endowed expertise in kitchen and bath design with the firm. Among her vested work experience, her most memorable project was the complete refit of a 158-foot sailing yacht belonging to a European prime minister.
Born in Russia, Shelden was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., and now resides in San Diego. She is fluent in English and Russian, and conversant in Spanish, Hebrew and Sign Language.
Located in North Park, Van Slyke and Shelden are serious about serving the community they work in. The firm strives to be responsible members of the community, and sponsor community organizations such as the Balboa Tennis Club.
"I founded my company on the principles of integrity, quality and service," Van Slyke said. "We have stayed true to those principles over the years as we have grown within the San Diego community and helped many clients realize the full potential of their homes."
Van Slyke and Shelden share additional information about their firm and services below:
Tell us in a few sentences what services you provide or what you do
Specializing in kitchen and bath renovations, Kitchen & Bath Design/Build is a green company, providing full interior design services and general contracting in the San Diego area. Services also include room additions, new construction to include new plumbing, electrical, drywall, painting, HVAC, flooring, wall treatments, cabinets and countertops, appliances, plumbing fixtures, window treatments, landscaping, and the selection of furniture and accessories.
What led you to this line of business/work?
Van Slyke: When I was helping a friend remodel his kitchen I caught the "remodeling bug," especially when it came to older homes. Little by little and being lucky enough to work with some real experts in the field I settled into remodeling.
Shelden: When the due time arrived at the end of high school to make a decision for “the rest of my life,” I took those words into serious consideration: I decided on interior design, toasting to never having to get bored with my job, and chose to attend the Design Institute of San Diego, a four year, specialized institution offering one program, drinking to not having the option to change my major three and half years into it. You could say I forced myself to be happy, but at least it worked! I love what I do for a living. I have always had a keen eye or two for the artistic side of it all, and have been remodeling my mother’s homes since I was seven. Therefore, when it comes to experience, don’t be fooled by my college graduation date, add some twelve unsupervised, veteran years to that.
What sets you apart from your competitors?
Even though Dwight has a superb sense of design as it is, his expertise is in construction and engineering. As a general contractor with over 25 years of experience, he is detail oriented and knows more about this industry than one could fathom. When you are dealing with kitchen and bath design, there is a lot that goes into it and it truly does need specialized attention, as it requires proper code regulations.
Such reason is why you primarily only see either interior designers, or kitchen and bath designers specifically. We partnered up last year and are working simultaneously as a general contracting and designing corporation. For the price of one, you are working with a general contractor specializing in kitchens and baths, AND an interior designer. You won’t find that often. As a matter of fact, the two professions are quite competitive. Thusly, the collaboration of having us both working on your project is a one stop shop deal.
What is unique about your business?
We’re a mom-and-pop business! We have established a tight knit family of subcontractors whom we have worked with for over 10 years. Martin is our electrician, Eddie is our plumber, Scott is a good friend of mine (he does our drywall), brother Bradley is our painter, and carpenter Brian is my nephew, he has been doing the demo, installations and carpentry work for over 13 years now. We maintain close relationships with all of our clients.
If you prefer to see some work that we have done, sure we can show you pictures just like every one else, however our past clients are just a phone call away, and they are always more than welcoming to have us come by and show their remodeled homes to you.
If someone is deciding on a service that you provide, why should they choose your business?
It is our experience, knowledge, working with a small close knit company where you only need one phone number to call, where the same people show up at your home and never any strangers.
