There’s a scene in “Evita” where Eva Peron decides she has had about enough with people spreading false rumors about her, and consults to her personal team for a glamorous makeover.
During this musical number, “Rainbow High,” Evita sings about the new woman she wants to embody and portray to Argentinians.
One of her operative lines from that song, “so Christian Dior me, from my head to my toes,” is clearly proclaiming that this woman means business - and knows her fashion houses very well.
Needless to say, Evita goes through a major transformation, elevating her public stance and respect from her people. Granted, many people still hated what she did for the middle class, but I’m sure they also envied her fashionable taste. That taste can only come and be developed through time and setting aside personal dates for some fashion playtime!
Fashion playtime? Yes, darlings, such beautiful things exist in this world! You just have to make time for them - and do some preparation before you step inside a store and make a mess out of yourself.
But before we get all rallied up and head over to the nearest department or boutique store, let’s go over a couple of things to ensure everyone is on the same page and makes the most out of their fashion playtime.
Allow me to define what a fashion playtime is! It’s a personal date you make with yourself to encourage your fashion sense to explore new grounds - in high-end retail stores. Sounds a bit intimidating? It shouldn’t be!
Stores such as Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Prada - the list goes on - that you wouldn’t even bother walking into because, well, maybe you don’t want to drop $4,000 on a Saint Laurent shirt. Trust me darlings, there is nothing wrong with that if you can afford it.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t walk into one of these stores and simply try things on! Yes, an associate (who will want that commission) will instantly come to you and try and become your best friend, encouraging you to try things on and open a fitting room for you as you make your way through the store - sometimes with a complimentary glass of champagne! But don’t let this experience go to waste, rather go with the moment.
Walk around the store, feel each piece of clothing that catches your eye, and most importantly, don’t be afraid to pick that double-quilted Chanel bag that’s making your heart skip a beat. Go ahead, throw the strap around your shoulder and admire the quality of the product! Then proceed on setting it back down and continue your play date.
Once you’ve tried things on, take note of the things you really liked and made you happy. Don’t look at this date as a way to discourage you for the things you can’t afford, rather to inspire you of the things you can try on and play with simply because you can!
Because sometimes it’s nice to feel like the first lady of Argentina - sans the tragic death the poor woman went through.
