SAN DIEGO -- Lambda Archives of San Diego has received a $2,500 grant from San Diego LGBT Pride for a much needed infrastructure repair project.
Stephen Whitburn, interim general manager of Pride, presented the Lambda Archives board with a giant check on Feb. 22 at the Archives’ second annual Pajama Party fundraising event at Snooze restaurant. The grant monies will go towards repair of a malfunctioning air conditioning unit in the Archives new facilities.
"Pride's core mission is to build respect for the LGBT community; a task that is impossible if we do not honor our history. Lambda Archives of San Diego has built a home for our history, our movement, our shared journey. It is our distinct honor to support their incredible work," Whitburn said.
Lambda Archives of San Diego maintains its archival holdings at stable low temperatures for maximum longevity. The current system in a portion of the storage area is inadequate for archival needs and needs to be replaced. Without stable temperature control, documents, media and ephemera are susceptible to rapid deterioration.
Further, an overstressed and potentially leaky system could be disastrous to fragile and unique holdings, endangering the histories and legacies our LGBT community. Lambda Archives board members aid they are grateful for the grant from Pride, which will pay for about half the needed repairs. Fundraising is underway to raise the $3,000 still needed.
Lambda Archives is committed to ensuring the physical infrastructure is in place to continue preserving the materials entrusted into its care.
About Lambda Archives
Lambda Archives of San Diego is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to collect, preserve and teach the history of LGBT people in the San Diego and Northern Baja California region. Although most of the collections date to post-1970, there are original materials back to the 1920s. History is best served by the records and cultural artifacts of those people who are directly involved in its events. Lambda Archives (founded as the Lesbian and Gay Archives of San Diego) has dedicated itself to preserving and interpreting this important historical record.
