SAN DIEGO -- A group of friends - calling themselves "The Glitteratti" - have joined together to make a difference in the lives of people in need, and will host their first benefit event this Saturday, March 2 to benefit The Center's Youth Housing Project (YHP).
Event attendees are asked to bring gift cards in any denomination that can be used by YHP residents to purchase everyday items that they might not be able to afford otherwise.
"The Glitteratti" was formed by five local activists and friends - Benny Cartwright, a staff writer for SDGLN; Ebony Aldridge; Rick Cervantes; Patrick Wallace; and Mike Curry - who put together a blanket and jacket drive for the homeless last December. The group decided to take their efforts a step further and create a group that could put together regular benefits to help those in need.
The group selected YHP as the beneficiary of this first event because of their connection to the LGBT community, and the specific needs of the youth participating in the program.
The Sunburst Youth Housing Project provides 23 units of affordable, supportive housing for youth between 18-24 years of age, with a special focus on LGBTQ and HIV+ youth. These high-risk youth were living in the streets or in public spaces after having been ejected from their homes because of their sexual orientation.
In order to facilitate the collection of gift cards, attendees are asked to use the following guide to make their donation:
- Last names starting with A-H: Target gift card
- Last names starting with I-O: Ikea gift card
- Last names starting with P-Z: Grocery store gift card
The event will take place at Uptown Tavern, located at 1236 University Ave. in Hillcrest.
