Fashionably Out: What makes us “gay-gasp” on the red carpet

One thing all men can agree on is there is nothing like seeing a girl dressed up nicely. And gay men know how to show their appreciation for women who do this right. They will call the girl out and make her feel more of a queen than them and might even buy her a rose from someone selling flowers outside a nightclub on a Sunday night.

Gays love this stuff! It’s in their DNA. Every gay man has the “hots” for at least one starlet, and swear they would “go straight for her.” Though their features play a role, it also has to do with the way they make us “gay-gasp” every time we see a picture of them on the tabloids, the cover of a magazine or walking on the red carpet working a great outfit!

Given the 85th Academy Awards are on Sunday, we will highlight a couple of actresses you should keep your eyes open for. Because, let’s be honest, the Oscars have evolved into a red carpet event rather than the taping of unoriginal, emotionally driven but rehearsed acceptance speeches.

Marion Cotillard is one of those rare gems who tend to grace Earth once every 50 years. Her Parisian nationality serves us grace, delicacy and a touch of individuality - something her stylist knows how to bring out of her for every major event! Usually seen in Christian Dior, Marion is that perfect reincarnation of a modern Audrey Hepburn. We can always expect her to wear a dress that cinches around her waist, bringing jealousy out of every drag queen.

Julianne Moore is that beloved redhead whom all gay aspire to one day grow up to be. Or should at least consider. For the most part, this Sarah Palin look-alike embraces her middle-age body and goes for dresses that accentuate her hips and bring out her gorgeous hair color. A hit or miss starlet on most red carpet events, we’d prefer her to look like a classy lady this weekend!

Something interesting about Charlize Theron is that even though she has incredibly soft features, she can easily work the “drag queen” look. Her green eyes pierce through every camera that points at her - her way of showing amateur drag queens how it’s done. Her best moment was last year’s Golden Globe Awards, where she revealed major leg a la Angelina Jolie in a rosy princess dress.

Lastly, Rooney Mara. Need we say more? The girl with the dragon tattoo can rock any edgy rock ‘n’ roll look, yet bring freaking class to it! Very versatile (and usually with her lips pursed on every red caroet event), this girl can easily be an inspiration to many of our lesbian friends.

So wherever you find yourself this Sunday, make sure to catch these gals on the red carpet this weekend - and see which one makes you turn to the person next to you and say “Oh, honey, I would so go straight for her!”

Who knows, some bars around your neighborhood might be hosting an Oscar viewing party! For those in San Diego, Uptown Tavern is one such place. Glam up, grab a friend or two, and enjoy the fashion!

And if you’re like many, no one will hate on you if you leave after the red carpet is over. Unless, of course, you too want to cry in glee during Anne Hathaway’s acceptance speech.
