TONIGHT: Democrats for Equality to consider endorsements in local special elections

SAN DIEGO -- Tonight's San Diego Democrats for Equality meeting - the first of the year - will feature candidate forums and endorsements for two local special elections.

Club members will hear from candidates vying for the State Senate District 40 seat recently vacated by Juan Vargas and the San Diego City Council District 4 seat, open after Tony Young resigned at the end of last year.

Assemblymember Ben Hueso, the only Democratic candidate running for the State Senate seat, is scheduled to attend the meeting to speak to the crowd and seek the club's endorsement. Hueso previously scored 100 percent on the club's candidate questionnaire.

City Council District 4 candidates Myrtle Cole, Dwayne Crenshaw and Brian "Barry" Pollard have submitted questionnaires and are all scheduled to attend. Cole and Crenshaw both scored 100%, while Pollard scored 24%.

Club officials say that Pollard is ineligible for the club's endorsement due to his failure to answer any questions regarding reproductive rights.

A poll released today by GIS Strategy Research of 323 San Diego Council District 4 high-propensity registered voters gave the following results for the nine official candidates:

Dwayne Crenshaw – 24%

Bruce Williams – 15%

Brian “Barry” Pollard – 9%

Blanca Lopez Brown – 2.5%

Myrtle Cole – 2%

Monica Montgomery – 1%

Ray Smith – 1%

Tony Villafranca – 1%

Sandy Spackman - 0.5%

Undecided – 44%

The telephone poll was conducted Jan. 28-30. Officials from GIS say the poll has a sampling error of +/- 5 percent.

While the meeting is open to the public, only club members are eligible to vote on endorsements.

Social time begins at 6:30 pm with the business meeting and candidate forums starting at 7 pm.

The meeting will take place in the Joyce Beers Community Center, located in the Uptown Shopping District on Vermont Street, just north of University Avenue.

While the club normally meets on the fourth Thursday of each month, the January meeting was moved back to make way for a special event that many of the club's members attended last week.
