SAN DIEGO -- Lambda Archives of San Diego will host its 2012 "Pioneers, Heroes, and Trailbazers" awards event on Friday, Sept. 7, noting the organization's 25th year.
At the event, five trailblazing local LGBT community organizations will be honored for their long history of service in San Diego, including Dignity, Metropolitan Community Church, Imperial Court de San Diego, The San Diego LGBT Community Center and San Diego Pride.
The event will be held at the Officers Club within the Marine Corp Recruit Depot, an active U.S. military base. Holding such an event would have been previously closed to a celebration of LGBT achievements, during the days of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
“With the end of the 'Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell' policy, our LGB service members can now proudly and openly declare their sexuality as well as their love of their country," said Maureen Steiner, president of Lambda Archives. "That is in itself a historic achievement. At the same time, we look forward to the day our transgender friends will have equality under the law."
Of the organizations receiving the award, Steiner says that this occasion is the perfect time to honor them.
“These five organizations have been serving San Diegans since the 1970s, long before it was popular to recognize the existence of lesbians, gays, bisexual or transgender people, let alone serve their needs," Steiner said. "It was then a hostile and conservative community; each organization sought to provide some sense of well-being to its constituents. Their successes are evident by their continued existence. That is why we have chosen them as our 2012 honorees."
Steiner hopes that community members will join her at the event and purchase tickets to celebrate the pioneers of San Diego's LGBT community.
“We can’t think of any finer place to hold our 25th Anniversary Gala than in the beautiful, historic Officer’s Club at MCRD. It is now available to us for this wonderful celebration and the public is invited to join in.”
The gala will take place at the Spanish Colonial-style Officers Club, Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Friday, Sept. 7, from 6 to 10 pm.
Reservations must be made by Aug. 31. Tickets can be purchased for $100 online or by calling 619-260-1522.
Formal attire requested. Creativity and uniforms welcome!
