SAN DIEGO -- The Young Professionals Council (YPC) of the San Diego LGBT Community Center will host their first champagne brunch to celebrate the inaugural graduating class of the YPC Academy.
The event will be held Sunday, July 1, from 11 am to 1 pm at Wang's North Park, and include food, mimosas and the company of a group of San Diego's upcoming community leaders.
The YPC is a diverse group of young LGBT professionals and allies, dedicated to the preservation and future growth of The San Diego LGBT Community Center. The group's mission is to develop and empower young LGBT professionals and their allies through the YPC Academy program, which will help expand the ranks of young LGBT leaders that are ready to further equality for our community through board service for a variety of agencies, not-for-profit organizations and government commissions.
The first YPC Academy class met over six full-day Saturday sessions from March through June, and discussed topics such as serving on a government board or commission; nonprofit board governance; community engagement; and social justice.
The champagne brunch will raise funds for The Center and its program, while celebrating the academy graduates. Community members are encouraged to attend the event to support The Center and celebrate its new leaders.
Among the first class of YPC Academy graduates is Ben Cartwright, SDGLN Staff Writer and San Diego Gay Men's Chorus executive director; Port of San Diego web content specialist Barbara Moreno; Ian Johnson of The Center; John Greenwell of KIPP Preparatory Academy; filmmaker Maricar Camaya; and others.
