SDGLN's Ben Cartwright selected as first executive director of San Diego Gay Men's Chorus

SAN DIEGO -- Longtime San Diego Gay & Lesbian News Staff Writer Ben Cartwright has accepted a position as the first executive director of the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus (SDGMC), a local LGBT music and arts organization.

After a long search, the nonprofit organization, with over 120 singing members, decided to hire Cartwright for the position because of his deep roots in the San Diego community, experience and education. Cartwright, who was born and raised in San Diego, has participated in numerous LGBT organizations since he was a teenager, including San Diego LGBT Pride, Gay For Good San Diego, the Stonewall Citizens Patrol, San Diego Remembers and The San Diego LGBT Community Center.

Cartwright, 32, received a master's degree in nonprofit leadership and management from the University of San Diego (USD), and holds a bachelor's degree in communication from San Diego State University.

He has been involved with SDGLN since its inception in October 2009. Ken Williams, Editor in Chief of SDGLN, said Cartwright will remain on the staff in a part-time capacity, continuing to write stories and support the various nonprofit organizations that the media company supports.

"Ben is a valuable member of the SDGLN team, so we are pleased that he will remain active as a writer," Williams said. "What I know is this: The chorus is gaining a wonderful addition to their team, and we at SDGLN could not be happier for Ben and the chorus."

Johnathan Hale, Publisher of SDGLN, was happy for Cartwright's career advancement.

"I've been very pleased to watch the growth of the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus over the last couple of years, and think that Ben was the perfect choice for the organization and will help them grow to even greater heights," Hale said. "I'm glad that Ben will be able to stay on board with us here at SDGLN, too, to help us continue our mission of supporting the community we serve."
