SAN DIEGO -- Retired federal court Judge Vaughn Walker, who overturned California Proposition 8 that eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry, will be the guest speaker at the Greater San Diego Business Association (GSDBA) Annual Awards Luncheon on June 21 at The Prado restaurant ballroom in Balboa Park.
The Awards Luncheon is to recognize and honor business and community leaders that best exemplify the values and business success for which we stand.
Judge Walker served as a district judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California from 1989 to 2011; he presided as Chief Judge of that court from 2004 to 2010.
On Jan. 11, 2010, Judge Walker began hearing arguments in Perry v. Schwarzenegger. The case was a federal constitutional challenge to California's Proposition 8, a voter initiative constitutional amendment that eliminated the right of same sex couples to marry, a right which had previously been granted after the California Supreme Court found that Proposition 22 was unconstitutional.
On Aug. 4, 2010, Judge Walker ruled that Proposition 8 was unconstitutional “under both the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses” and prohibited its enforcement.
Judge Walker retired at the end of February 2011.
Judge Walker has been asked to speak about the status of LGBT rights today. Tickets for this event are limited and may be reserved by contacting the GSDBA HERE.
