SAN DIEGO – Local entrepreneur Billy Canu, along with leading New York City stylist Lorean Cairns, recently opened FOX & JANE Salon, bringing a more social, laid-back vibe to San Diego’s salon scene.
The three-chair salon, located at 2802 Fifth Ave. in Bankers Hill, has already become very popular since its opening on March 26. The first FOX & JANE opened in New York City, and has received rave reviews in New York Magazine for its “bright and cheery” atmosphere and impeccable service.
“Our No. 1 priority is providing an environment where our clients can have fun while our stylists help them achieve a great look,” said Cairns, owner and lead stylist.
The FOX & JANE team includes artistic and innovative stylists that specialize in a variety of hair types and styles. Services include precision and texture cutting; detailed finishing work for short and long hair; Keratin smoothing or permanent curl treatments for customized texture; scalp massages and complimentary neck cleanups between appointments; special event styling such as the perfect blowout, smooth sexy hair or long-lasting up-dos; and specialized men’s grooming.
Canu, whose background is marketing, says he is enjoying his new role as a salon owner.
“I met Lorean about 15 years ago but we never really hung out,” Canu told San Diego Gay & Lesbian News. “About a year ago, I was in New York for work, and we ended up meeting for the weekend, and I could see how passionate she was about hair, and I was looking for an investment opportunity.
“We became instant best friends, and in July 2011, we opened the first salon in New York.”
Canu said that the New York location immediately saw a great response, and received major coverage from media like Time Out New York magazine.
“The word of mouth has become overwhelming,” Canu said. “We are fully booked all the time – things have been great.”
When it came time to think about expansion, Canu said that San Diego was a natural fit.
“We knew a salon space was coming open, and I thought it would be great to open something in my hometown,” he said.
Because he had never been a part of the beauty industry before, Cairns put Canu through a sort of “beauty bootcamp” before opening the New York salon so he could learn the ins-and-outs of the business.
“Cairns has 15-years experience, I don’t, so there was a lot to learn,” Canu said.
Canu, who’s business expertise has been a big part of the salon’s success, started his first business eight years ago at the age of 21.
“I started a DVD rental company, similar to NetFlix,” Canu said. “As the company grew, I sold it, but we realized that the company was successful because of the marketing we did. The new owner kept me on as the marketing person for the business and this led me to open my marketing firm, SEO Haus.”
Canu’s company has grown substantially over the years, providing internet marketing services for nearly 500 clients worldwide, ranging from small companies to large corporations.
When asked if he ever imagined that his business ventures would have such wild growth, Canu said that it is much more than just him.
“It’s all bigger than me, and my goals have always been bigger than who I am,” Canu said. “It’s all about everybody, and the end goal is to build something bigger than all of us. It’s about the success I can create for people with these businesses.”
Along with the FOX & JANE brand, Canu and Cairns have also opened the Finishing Bar in New York, which provides manicure, pedicure and other services. The pair hopes to bring a Finishing Bar to San Diego.
As for the salon, the intimate space is comfortable and casual, providing clients with an affordable, high quality experience. Canu says that all styles are required to have at least 5-years of experience, and the team at the San Diego location all have at least 7 years.
All types of hair are welcome at the salon, and complimentary beer and wine is available for all customers ages 21 and up.
Canu said that the name of the salon, FOX & JANE, transcends into the atmosphere.
“It captures the masculine and feminine qualities of the salon, and once inside, you’ll feel like you’re in a living room. It’s a non-sales, relaxed environment – how a salon should be,” Canu said. “Those who are looking for a more intimate, fun, neighborly, salon experience that is not stuffy, come try us out.
