SAN DIEGO -- Community members are being rallied to attend the next meeting of the City of San Diego's Planning Commission on Thursday, April 26, where the panel is expected to vote on whether or not to recommend the Hillcrest Pride Flag project to the City Council.
At its April 12 meeting, the commission, which is comprised of seven citizens who make recommendations to changes in the city's General Plan and community plans, was unable to secure enough votes on either side to move the issue forward. For the commission to recommend or not recommend a project, at least four votes must be cast in favor or against.
Because of the absence of two commissioners, the vote tally was 3-2, which pushed the issue onto the agenda for this week's meeting.
Opposition to the project was expressed by two community members at the meeting as well as a few commissioners, so Hillcrest Pride Flag project organizers are encouraging community members to attend the meeting to speak in support of the project.
Neighborhood activists are working with the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA) to install a flag pole on Normal Street where it intersects with University Avenue that will fly an 18 foot x 12 foot rainbow flag year round. The proposal includes the installation of the 65-foot pole and some enhancements around the base.
Organizers hope that the project moves through the city's permitting process swiftly, as the goal is to have the flag pole in place for this year's San Diego LGBT Pride weekend, to be held July 20-22.
Those who attend Thursday's meeting can fill out a speakers slip and request to speak before the commission or simply register support. Those who are unable to attend can send letters of support to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The meeting will begin at 9 am in the City Council chambers, and the Hillcrest Pride Flag project is Item 6 on the agenda.
City Hall is located at 202 C St. in downtown San Diego.
Urban Mo's Bar & Grill, which is a supporter of the project, is gathering many of its employees and customers to come to the meeting and voice their support. The company is encouraging all supporters to wear pink to show their support!
