SAN DIEGO -- San Diego LGBT Pride has opened the community nomination process for its annual Spirit of Stonewall Awards, which will be presented during the 2012 Spirit of Stonewall Rally, kicking off the America’s Pride events on July 20.
“In preparation for San Diego LGBT Pride 2012, you are invited to help us identify our community’s unsung heroes for the annual Spirit of Stonewall Awards," San Diego LGBT Pride board co-chair Jennifer Sieber said. "The awards recognize individuals who contribute significantly to the LGBT community though their leadership, activism, and fundraising efforts."
The award categories are:
Champion of Pride: An individual or couple who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the LGBT community over an extended period of years and/or has made an exceptional contribution in the past year.
Friend(s) of Pride: An individual or couple who does not identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, but who has stalwartly supported the LGBT community over an extended period of years and/or has made an exceptional contribution in the past year.
Stonewall Service: A group or organization, which may or may not identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender, but who has stalwartly supported the LGBT community over an extended period of years and/or has made an exceptional contribution in the past year.
Community Service: An individual or couple who is recognized as an up-and-coming leader within the community or whose contribution to the community in the past year was of particular significance.
“Recognition is one of the greatest ways to encourage and perpetuate further acts of courage and change, so we ask you to take part in the nomination process. Help us ensure that those who contribute to the community are honored and not overlooked,” said Dwayne Crenshaw, San Diego LGBT Pride's executive director.
Those who wish to nominate a person, couple, group, or organization that satisfies the criteria for any of these should complete the nomination form available at online.
The deadline for nominations is April 6. The San Diego LGBT Pride Board of Directors will review all submissions and announce award recipients in early May.
