SAN DIEGO -- The Sierra del Mar Division of the Salvation Army recently awarded local television news reporter Matt Johnson with its Golden Bell Award.
The award is given to members of the media "whose exceptional skill helped tell the stories of those in genuine need." The organization relies on the support of local media to raise awareness about its programs to rally community members to provide support.
Upon accepting the award, Johnson said that he has supported the Salvation Army for over 10 years and called the organization "the true heroes in our community."
Johnson worked for numerous news organizations in New Mexico, Palm Springs and Reno before returning to San Diego to work for Fox 5. Besides his support of the Salvation Army, Johnson works with numerous other charitable causes, including AIDS Walk San Diego, one of the major annual undertakings by The San Diego LGBT Community Center in Hillcrest.
