Luis Fitch is an up-and-coming leader in San Diego's LGBT community. After working for many years in the banking industry, Fitch recently began working as an HIV Counselor/ADAP Coordinator for a non-profit organization.
The 32-year-old Fitch is single and has lived in both Tijuana and San Diego.
What organization(s) do you volunteer for, and why?
I think it’s a great thing to volunteer and I would encourage anyone to do it.
The community gives us so much already and volunteering is one way of giving back and saying thank you. Plus, we never know if in the future we also might need a helping hand.
I have volunteered for Mama’s Kitchen and at the San Diego Pride Festival through Wells Fargo, when I was working there as a banker. Personally, it was a great experience for me.
What motivates you to do the volunteer work you do?
The opportunity to help people, feel useful and to give back to my community. I mean, my community is home to me and who doesn’t like improving their home?
Do you volunteer because of your work, or not? And what do you do for a career?
I volunteered by choice.
What is something that many people do not know about you?
Haha! I’m a pretty shy guy. Sometimes when I meet people in person at events and such, they get the wrong impression - they think I’m unfriendly, but it’s actually just that I’m really shy at first!
What would you like to see change in the LGBT community?
Unity. As much as we fight for it outside of our community, I sometimes see that we, ourselves, need to work more on that. We really need to come together as one community, regardless of our social status, religion, financial status, etc.
We need to lead by example.
What do you like most about the local LGBT community?
The charity/fundraising events and the social life. I am a very social person, so I love the fact that I can run into a lot of friends and people I know in my community.
What sorts of things do you do to enrich your social life other than volunteering?
I enjoy attending charity/fundraising events and meeting people that do any type of work that involves helping others and making a difference - it really motivates and inspires me.
