SAN DIEGO -- Legendary circuit DJ Manny Lehman did a lot more than just spin for the energetic, dancing crowd Friday night at Bourbon Street Bar & Grill.
Lehman was scheduled to perform during the bar's annual holiday toy drive event, in which customers were asked to bring unwrapped gift donations to benefit Toys for Tots in exchange for $5 in "Bourbon Bucks." While several toys were donated throughout the night, Lehman made the biggest donation of all.
General manager Chuck Ferrante said that at the end of the night, Lehman decided to donate his entire booking fee back to Toys for Tots. While the amount of the donation was not disclosed, it is believed to be a substantial amount of money since Lehman is a top-name act who performs on the international scene.
"I've been in the bar business for a long time and thought I had seen it all but this absolutely blew me away," Ferrante said.
Each year, Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys during the months of October, November and December for distribution to children in need at Christmastime.
The organization has chapters throughout the United States in places where a Marine Corps Reserve Unit is located. Thousands of toys are collected each year.
Those who wish to donate toys to this year's drive may do so at Bourbon Street through Friday, Dec. 23 and receive $5 in Bourbon Bucks.
Bourbon Street is located at 4612 Park Blvd. in University Heights.
