California's wine country welcomes nation's first LGBT retirement community development

SANTA ROSA, Calif. -- Oakmont Senior Living has announced plans to develop the nation's first LGBT retirement community with the option of continuing care.

The community will be known as Fountaingrove Lodge, and future residents of this lush 10-acre property located in the heart of Sonoma County will enjoy many amenities.

With activities and amenities to enhance wellness and contemporary living, Fountaingrove Lodge will provide an inviting, supportive and active lifestyle in a setting of natural beauty, where a diverse group of LGBT seniors can live, relax and enjoy a community of friends.

Although still in development, Fountaingrove Lodge is now accepting deposits from future residents.

Filling this huge void for LGBT seniors was the idea of founders and principals of Oakmont Senior Living (OSL), Bill and Cindy Gallaher.

"Fountaingrove Lodge is a dream that has been several years in the making, and reflects our desire to provide fine retirement living opportunities for a broad range of seniors," Bill Gallaher said.

"The success of Aegis Gardens, which we built in 2001 in Fremont, Calif., for the Chinese-American senior community, led us to consider developing other communities that would serve additional diverse senior populations," he said. "This latest project will fill a void that has existed for far too long, and we are proud to lead the way on this front."

Residences at Fountaingrove Lodge will be comprised of six bungalows and 64 apartment homes in nine floor plans - ranging from 830 to 2,001 square feet - designed in the Craftsman style of architecture, with the use of fine woodwork and stone inside and out that echo the native rocks and trees on the site.

Each bungalow will have its own patio or deck, while each apartment home will have a private patio or balcony that expands the living space to the outdoors.

Fountaingrove's Design Center will allow residents to customize their home.

"Our goal is to provide a beautiful, secure, social, and dynamic community for LGBT seniors with the dignity and respect they deserve. We feel Fountaingrove Lodge compliments those sensibilities," Cindy Gallaher said. "We anticipate that this project will become the hub for the broader North Bay LGBT community, and reflect the interests and passions of our residents."

The property will boast wireless service in the main common areas, a library, business center, bank, salon and day spa, great hall for special events and dancing, library, gift shop, pet park and bocce court. Residents can join friends for a glass of wine in the lounge, grab a snack in the bistro, or dine in the formal dining room.

They can also throw a private party in the Wine Cave, rustle up a game of cards, watch a favorite film in the HD theater, or get creative in the art studio.

On site workshops and literary presentations will be provided for all residents, and gourmet meals, weekly housekeeping, concierge services, and home and yard maintenance will be available.

Exercise opportunities will abound at Fountaingrove Lodge, where residents can take a stroll through the grounds or visit the greenhouse, resident gardens or orchard. There will also be a championship-level Fountaingrove Golf Course and an on-site fitness center, where they can join a yoga or aerobics class, focus on strength training in the fully equipped weight room, take part in health and fitness lectures, or swim laps in the outdoor pool.

Fountaingrove Lodge's location in the heart of Sonoma County provides countless opportunities for activities and excursions.

Hiking and walking trails, theater productions and world-class wineries offer the possibility for a multitude of outings. Mountains to the east and hills to the west will frame magnificent sunrises and sunsets at Fountaingrove Lodge, and the area is blessed with clear skies and clean air, while only minutes away from medical, cultural and recreational venues, as well as major transportation corridors.

Fountaingrove Lodge will also be a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), providing peace of mind for a growing number of seniors who want to live independently now but would like to have health-care service close at hand should the need arise.

Health-care services will be made available in the home, paid for on a fee-for-service basis as a resident may need it, and include state-of-the-art emergency call and response systems. In addition, there will be an onsite care center which will provide memory care for residents with Alzheimer's/dementia.

Options such as temporary home health care, follow-up care during recuperation from short-term illness or injury, and full-time private care are available.

Fountaingrove Lodge's sales 0ffice is located at 4210 Thomas Lake Harris Drive in Santa Rosa. For more information about pricing, amenities or to schedule a tour of the property, call (707) 576-1101 or visit Fountaingrove Lodge's website.
