San Diego County Meal Services for K-12 Students and Senior Citizens

My office is working to provide Mid-City and South San Diego County residents with the latest information on the impact the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19, is having on our community. Our senior citizens and young students will be the most affected by this crisis, and organizations throughout San Diego have stepped up to help residents grappling with issues around food security.

I wanted to make sure you have the latest information on local meal services that are available: 

SENIOR MEAL SERVICES

Californians ages 65 and older are more likely to get very sick from COVID-19, which is why the state is recommending older adults at elevated risk remain at home until further guidance is issued. If you fall into this group and do not have someone who can pick up groceries on your behalf, please reach out to the following San Diego organizations for assistance:

  • San Diego Food Bank's Senior Food Program is a federal program that provides monthly supplemental food packages to income-eligible senior citizens aged 60 and over. The Food Bank administers the program and distributes USDA-provided food at 45 distribution sites every month in communities throughout San Diego County. Check out the Food Bank's website to learn more.
  • Meals on Wheels is continuing deliveries with COVID-19 precautions in place. METRO SAN DIEGO SERVICE CENTER: ((619)) 295-9501; SOUTH COUNTY SERVICE CENTER: ((619)) 420-2782
  • Jewish Family Services is distributing pre-bagged food via drive-thru on their main campus located at 8804 Balboa Avenue. Monday-Friday; 11 a.m.-1 p.m. They are also delivering meals for homebound seniors who are self-isolating. For more information, contact: (858) 637-3210.
  • National City Nutrition Center is continuing its Home Delivered Meals Program. The center's lunch program has changed to pick-up ONLY.

If you missed your school meal service day, or just need a little extra help to feed your family during this crisis, here are other food services you can seek out:

San Diego County-wide

  • San Diego Food and Diaper Bank - 200 food distribution sites throughout San Diego County are continuing to operate for families and seniors to receive food assistance during this crisis. If you are in need of food assistance, contact the Food Bank's toll-free number: 1-(866) 350-FOOD (3663).
  • Feeding San Diego is working diligently to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and provide food resources to those affected. Check out their website for a list of regularly updated distribution sites.
  • San Diego farms are providing food during the COVID-19 pandemic while farmer's markets are closed. Visit the San Diego Sustainable Living Institute's website for a list of farms offering door-to-door delivery, online produce orders, farm stands and other services.
