Organizers stated that concerns due to rising COVID-19 cases and less room to social distance on 5th Avenue due to infrastructure improvements was the main reason for postponement.
Organizers of the Hillcrest CityFest street fair, a neighborhood tradition since 1984, have announced that this year's event will be postponed. The event was outright cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event is produced by the Hillcrest Business Association (HBA). After state guidance was changed to allow for most activities to resume on June 15, the HBA announced in May that Hillcrest CityFest would return this year, and be held on its traditional second Sunday of August date, this year being Aug. 8, 2021.
However, as COVID-19 cases have seen a slight uptick this summer, along with this year's addition of bike lanes on Fifth Avenue where the event is held, organizers don't feel they'll have enough time to make changes to the event that will allow for proper social distancing and other safety precautions. The bike lanes, which HBA described as "positive infrastructure improvements," include a cement buffer and have eliminated an entire open traffic lane. This will change how the event layout looks, therefore the HBA board decided to postpone in the interest of public health and safety.
A new date has not yet been announced.

The HBA is announcing that Hillcrest CityFest 2021 will be postponed. CityFest had been scheduled for August 8th, 2021 on Fifth Ave. As the event draws over 100,000 people, the County and City have classified it as a "mega event". Many of the Covid 19 rules relating to mega events would make producing the event untenable. Additionally, positive infrastructure changes on Fifth Ave. have meant that there is less room to produce the event safely.
The Covid19 pandemic is not over and Hillcrest businesses have always taken this issue seriously. New infrastructure on Fifth Ave. is an opportunity for the neighborhood but accommodating it must be planned for. Rather than try to produce the event under these conditions, the HBA board chose to reschedule the event to a time when these elements are no longer an issue or can be better accommodated.
