On March 25, 2021, the North County LGBTQ Resource Center was contacted by friends of a transgender man who was attacked after leaving the Coyote Bar & Grill in Carlsbad, CA. The man is now in stable conditions and recovering in a local hospital.
The North County LGBTQ Resource Center is working closely with the authorities to determine the circumstances leading up to the assault. We call on Carlsbad law enforcement to ensure that the incident is investigated to the fullest extent of the law.
While there are numerous claims on social media that lead to the understanding that this could possibly be a hate crime, we have not been able to talk to the actual victim and his girlfriend to determine so. Until further clarification our Center continues to offer services and emotional support to everyone that have been victim of personal assault, hate, and sexual assault and any kind of violence.
Attacks on the trans community increased in 2020 and coincided with a record number of anti-trans bills in state legislatures. Crimes committed against LGBTQ individuals have steadily increased since 2019. In November 2019 an attempted murder and hate crime in Oceanside left Geremias Martin with three stubs and wounds in his back and months of recovery time. On March 22 this year another man in Oceanside was assaulted because perceived to be gay, the OPD has caught the perpetrator that is now charged with hate crime.
If you, or anyone you know, has any information. Please do not hesitate to contact the North County LGBTQ Resource Center at 760-994-1690 or the Carlsbad Police Department.
