The theme will be incorporated into all of the organization's programming this year.
While it is unclear at this point whether San Diego Pride's 2021 signature events will be held in-person, virtually, or as a hybrid of the two, the organization is moving forward with its planning and programming regardless of the scenario. As planning moves forward, Pride leaders today announced that this year's theme will be "Resilient."
The annual San Diego Pride theme is important to the organization's programming as it sets the tone for the year's events. Since 1974, San Diego Pride has organized its signature events each summer in the form of a rally, parade, and festival. While these events our the organization's most high profile activities, San Diego Pride is unique in that it operates a portfolio of year-round programming to support the vast diversity of San Diego's LGBTQ community.
In a message to the community, San Diego Pride Executive Director Fernando Zweifach López [pronouns: they/them/theirs] explained how the organization employs the annual theme.
"Throughout the year our programs, events, education, and messages will focus on the ways in which our community and movement can restore, rebuild, redeem, and revive one another," wrote Lopez. "That as we reimagine a free and fearless future we are intentional about the resiliency we are weaving into our work. That as we tend to the issues impacting our LGBTQ communities around the world, we also remember to be healthy and whole. Brighter days lie ahead. Together in Pride, we are Resilient."
San Diego Pride's summer 2020 in-person events had to be re-imagined due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a day long livestream program called "Pride Live 2020." This year, Pride leaders are being "cautiously optimistic" about what in-person events will look like this summer and are planning for a variety of scenarios based on potential public health orders at the time.
