Stonewall Citizens' Patrol's vehicles found vandalized
Recently our patrol volunteers discovered our patrol vehicles vandalized. The damage was so extensive that both vehicles were deemed totaled. The safety of our volunteers is always our priority to include training, nighttime safety equipment, and PPE. All this safety equipment was taken as well.
Stonewall Citizens’ Patrol has been on patrol for 14 years in the Bankers Hill, Hillcrest, University Heights, and North Park neighborhoods. We began as a ‘neighborhood watch’ due to horrific crimes toward the LGBTQ community. Since 2006 we have maintained a neighborhood patrol and continue to work with our many community partners to ensure that there is always an extra set of ‘eyes and ears’ for our San Diego communities.
The most important thing is that all our volunteers are safe and that our financial loss is covered by insurance. Recently our organization met to discuss this incident and the most common question asked by volunteers was ‘When can we return to patrol?’ This reinforces our already known facts that we have some awesome volunteers!
COVID-19 has kept our patrols minimal but have adjusted our patrols since March 2020 to have a virtual presence in the neighborhoods. Our community contact rate was increased by nearly 500% in the past 6 months. This was done with phone calls and emails reaching out to community members and organizations. Community safety concerns were addressed with various community resources used.
In October 2020 we were returning to our mobile patrols with COVID-19 safety and PPE measures in place. With the recent additional health restrictions placed on our community, our patrol volunteers are returning to a virtual patrol format.
Our Board of Directors and staff are working to restore our mobile patrol presence. They are reviewing training procedures, equipment replacement options, and future parking facility securement.
If you have any information about this criminal activity toward our community and organization, please contact Stonewall Citizens’ Patrol at info@stonewallcitizens.org or leave a voicemail at 619-320-8219 and one of our Communications Volunteers will return your call. Together we will remain #communitystrong.
