Recommendations urged to quickly reduce transmissions of coronavirus.
This afternoon, Governor Gavin Newsom called on nightclubs, bars, brewpubs, and wineries in the state to close. He also urged seniors (65 years and older) and people with chronic health conditions to isolate themselves at home as an effort to contain further spread of the coronavirus.
Restaurants in California have been asked to reduce their occupancy by half by seating people farther away from each other, such as only utilizing every other table. The move came following Illinois Governor J.B. Prtizker's order to shut down all bars and restaurants in that state.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Newsom estimated the directive to seniors would affect 5.3 million Californians. While that number includes those most at risk simply due to their age, he said it does not include the millions more who have underlying health conditions that would make them vulnerable. The governor also announced that the state’s 108,000 homeless people would be prioritized for mitigation policies, with a significant push to move them indoors. Though details remained unclear, he said the state had hotels and motels that could be used to provide shelter, along with an additional 450 state-owned trailers sent to “critical points” to supplement those that were deployed in Los Angeles, Stockton, Sonoma and other places before the outbreak.
These reccomendations came just a few days following Newsom's request that any gatherings in the state over 250 people should be cancelled, and smaller events should practive social distancing techniques. The County of San Diego on Thursday issued a legally enforcable public health order restricting gatherings to 250 people, leading to a host of event postponements or cancellations.
Prior to the governor's announcement, Hillcrest nightclub Rich's San Diego made the decision on Saturday night to close until further notice, along with Uptown Tavern which closed effective this morning. Flicks will close effective 8 pm tonight. SDGLN will continue to update this page with updates about local venues and their plans during the coronavirus pandemic.
