Trump says he hopes she runs for governor.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders is departing the White House and her job as press secretary, President Donald Trump said on Thursday.
Sanders has held court to the press since 2017 and is only the third woman in history to perform in that role.
The president said Sanders will head back to Arkansas where he hopes she will run for governor.
Sanders, 36, has become a bit of a pop culture icon by the way she manages reporters and fields questions in the White House press room.
She also made headlines outside the White House last summer when the owner of the Red Hen restaurant asked Sanders to leave because of her affiliation with Trump.
The controversy compounded after Sanders used her Twitter account to name the eatery thus calling into question the ethics of doing so.
Saturday Night Live's resident comedian Aidy Bryant satirized her in many skits over the past few years.
Sanders' last day will be June 30.
