San Diego is losing another of its historic gay bars this year, The Caliph on Fifth Avenue in Bankers Hill will be shuttering for good on December 31, 2018.
Perhaps best known for its karaoke and live keyboard entertainment, The Caliph has been open for 59 years.
We reached out to the bar and they confirm that the quaint neighborhood nightspot is, in fact, bidding San Diego adieu.
"Big developer bought the building and plans are for a high rise housing development," a bar representative told us through Caliph's Facebook Messenger.
This closing is another blow to the LGBT community which has watched many gay businesses come and go recently.
It was just over a year ago that Numbers, another popular gay destination went dark.
What makes the closure of The Caliph so disheartening is not only its longtime history in the community but having to say farewell to all of the regular talent who have been entertaining new customers and loyal regulars alike for decades.
The Caliph's final day will be Monday, December 31, 2018.
The Caliph is located at 3100 Fifth Ave, San Diego, 92103.
